The influx of many Russian skaters in the 1990’s helped put Israel on the international scene . Israel’s only ice rink in Metulla hosted the International Jewish Ice Hockey championships in July 2009.

Ralph Cooperman won the British Junior fencing title in foil and saber and went on to represent Great Britain at the Olympic and Commonwealth games in the 1960’s. He also participated in a number of Maccabiah Games and became a coach to wheelchair fencers.

Gitty came on Aliyah from Montreal in 1964 and since retiring as a teacher of English has been active with many volunteer projects as well as being Chairperson of ESRA Ramat Hasharon..

An Art Gallery and a Museum sit side by side in Kibbutz Ein Harod in the Jezreel valley. The Mishkan LeOmanut is a leading Art centre with exhibition halls, a library and a unique collection of traditional Jewish art and Judaica. As well as being a research and study centre. The foresight of art lover and kibbutz pioneer Chaim Atar, the centre was established in the 1920’s. The Beit Sturman museum has a permanent exhibition of archaeology and natural history of the area.

FROM THE EDITOR

To acknowledge the thirty years of the Esra Magazine, we have designed a cover with 42 of the covers over the years, 31 of which are of Esra projects; brought some brief facts in Spotlight (page 7); reprinted an article from The Jerusalem Post about the magazine which captures its essence even today despite it having been written 18 years ago (page 10) and a personal account of proofing the magazine (page 13).
